Every Instagram character limit (2026)

  • **Caption:** 2,200 characters (about the first 125 show before '…more')
  • **Bio:** 150 characters
  • **Username:** 30 characters
  • **Name field:** 30 characters
  • **Hashtags:** 30 per post (a 31st makes the caption fail)
  • **Comment:** 2,200 characters
  • **Story / reel text:** ~2,200 characters
  • **Direct message:** ~1,000 characters
  • **Image alt text:** 100 characters

Counting as you write? The free Caption Character Counter shows all of these live and tells you exactly how much of your hook fits before the cut.

Why only the first ~125 characters matter

In the feed, Instagram truncates your caption after roughly 125 characters with a '…more' link. Most people never tap it. That means your hook — the line that makes someone stop scrolling — has to live in those first 125 characters. Front-load the value; save hashtags and context for later in the caption or the first comment.

The 30-hashtag hard limit

Instagram caps captions at 30 hashtags. Add a 31st and the platform rejects the entire caption — a common reason a post 'won't publish.' In practice you shouldn't be near 30 anyway; 3–8 relevant tags outperform a wall of them. Check yours against the banned hashtag list first.

The line-break problem (and the fix)

Instagram strips line breaks when there's a trailing space before them, and often collapses blank lines you type in the app — so the neat spacing you wrote turns into one solid block.

  1. Write your caption with normal paragraphs in the Caption Counter.
  2. Press 'Copy for Instagram' — it removes trailing spaces and inserts an invisible break character that Instagram preserves.
  3. Paste straight into Instagram; your spacing survives.

Tip:Want styled text in your bio too? The font generator makes copy-paste Unicode fonts that work inside the 150-character bio limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only about the first 125 show in the feed before the '…more' cut — so put your hook there. Bios are limited to 150 characters and usernames to 30.

How many hashtags can an Instagram caption have?

Up to 30 per post. Adding a 31st makes Instagram reject the whole caption. Most growth advice now favors 3–8 highly relevant tags instead.

Why do my Instagram line breaks disappear?

Instagram strips line breaks when there are trailing spaces before them and often collapses blank lines typed in the app. Ending each line cleanly — or using a tool that inserts an invisible break character — keeps your spacing intact.

What is the Instagram bio character limit?

150 characters. Usernames are limited to 30 characters and the name field to 30 characters.
